Haut-Martelange, 26 May 2025 - On 17 May, the 25,000th visitor of the underground visitor mine ‘Johanna’ was welcomed. Since opening in October 2022, the tour through the former slate mines has become a popular attraction.

Ms Lentz had the honour of being the 25,000th person to pass through the turnstile at the entrance to the visitor mine. The Luxembourg Museum Days - an open weekend for Luxembourg's museums - also took place that weekend. Mr and Ms Lentz took the opportunity to explore the west of the country and decided to visit the Slate Museum.
To mark the occasion, the museum's Board of Directors had a basket of products from the Öewersauer Nature Park put together. The gift was presented by Marco Schank, President of the “Musée de l'Ardoise” ASBL, Stephan Muller, Vice-President of the “Frënn vun der Lee” ASBL, and Anna Dormans, the museum's tourism coordinator.
The visitor was impressed by the special atmosphere underground, the mystical groundwater and the authentic visualisation of the working conditions of the ‘Leekëpperten’.
The historic slate mines, once Luxembourg's second largest industry, now attract around 20,000 visitors from all over the world every year - including tourists, locals and school classes of all ages. The fascinating world of the ‘Leekëpperten’ is accessed via around 370 steps and a depth of 42 metres. The underground visitor mine is impressively staged with modern lighting and projections. The tour is possible individually or in groups, with or without a guide.
But the museum offers much more than the underground area: numerous activities are offered on the 8-hectare site: Workshops, Outdoor Escape Room, a train ride, the ‘Bopebistro’, guided tours, exhibitions, ...
Slate mining characterised the life and landscape of the region for centuries. The museum not only aims to preserve this cultural heritage, but also to bring it to life - following its slogan: ‘Lieweg Geschicht - Geschicht erliewen’ (‘Living History - Experience History’).
If you're curious, you can visit the Musée de l'Ardoise during regular opening hours (Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm). The museum team is constantly working on new projects - a visit is always worthwhile!
