SCHOOL GROUPS
A DAY AT THE SLATE MUSEUM

Groups of schoolchildren from the age of 6 can experience an exciting day (3 to 6 hours) against the backdrop of the Haut-Martelange slate museum. You go search for the slate stone and learn how it was formed in the ground, how it was mined and what it was made into.
The slate industry and its unique site, which is still a witness from the age of the Industrial Revolution, can be discovered through various themes:
-
Slate and its properties
-
Geology of the Luxembourg Land
-
The slate miner and his craft
-
A creative work in stone (medallion, engraving, ...)
-
The carbide lamp
-
The steam engine
-
The typewriter
-
Dry wall construction
-
The transport of the slate
-
Storytelling and reading cards
Depending on the age of the excursion, the content is conveyed differently. The daily program can be put together individually and the following activities can also be booked, for example: demonstration of the craft of the slate miner, scavenger hunt, visit to an old mine from the 19th century, compilation of a dossier, ride with the industrial train through the museum area, making your own slab of slate and other workshops on the subject of slate and slate quarries.
The museum is open to schoolgroups all year round.
Entrance fees: €15 per pupil (entire day) & 1 accompanying person per class for free - Exact cost estimate on request

WORKSHOPS & TRAININGS
BLACKSMITH
COURSES
Since 2005, the Slate Museum is organizing a blacksmith class per year.
In the former factory smithy of ‘Ardoisières de Haut-Martelange’ and its narrowing shelter, you can hammer, beat, and fuel the metal in the nice atmosphere of the fire.
All year round, the Slate Museum is organizing different trainings and workshops, which might be creative, handcrafted or even a training for becoming a guide at the Museum. We are looking forward to teaching you some new skills and we would be more than happy if you can surprise us with your prestidigitation.
DRY WALL
CONSTRUCTION
A class around the topic of dry wall construction can be organized at the Slate Museum, where a lot of walls and buildings are constructed with this special technique. Let yourself be inspired and learn how to erect such walls, what are the advantages and how to build them yourself.
SCULPTING
COURSES
The sculpture course at the Slate Museum is concentrated on the work with slate but can be extended on the sculpturing of all kinds of rock coming from the area. The participants will learn the characteristics and difficulties of working with slate and how to treat it, so it can be shaped as per your instructions.
