AURAL ORAL – Workshop Performance

A cabbage. One million years. And the Slate Museum. What’s the connection?

As part of Dodeka – 12 Works for 12 Cantons, the Slate Museum welcomes Aural Oral, a workshop performance by artist and researcher Grace Gloria Denis, in collaboration with Frank Adams from SEED asbl.

An experience to listen to… and taste

At the heart of this unexpected encounter is “Beurré de Jalhay”, an old cabbage variety documented in the High Fens region since 1934.

Absent from the European Union’s official seed catalogue, the variety continues to survive thanks to citizen networks that preserve and pass on its seeds from one generation to the next.

Combining a listening session with a tasting experience, Grace Gloria Denis invites participants to discover its story and reflect on what it means to preserve and transmit something through time.

From a seed… to one million years

Aural Oral enters into dialogue with One Million Years by On Kawara, a work from the Mudam collection currently on display at the Slate Museum as part of Dodeka.

While On Kawara measures time through a staggering succession of years, a seed travels through time from generation to generation, from one pair of hands to another.

Two very different approaches that ultimately raise the same question: what allows something to endure through time, and what do we lose when it disappears?

A reflection that resonates particularly strongly at the Slate Museum, a place dedicated to memory, heritage and transmission.
